Wednesday, on January 24th, 2018, on the 159th anniversary of the Union of the Romanian Principalities, HE Metropolitan Nicolae together with Ss. Constantine and Helen Cathedral’s clergy officiated the Te-Deum service. Thanksgiving was given to God for all the bountiful gifts poured on the Romanian people, especially for the gift of unity of nation and faith.
Metropolitan Nicolae recalled how the Unification of the Principalities was accomplished in January of 1859 by electing Alexandru-Ioan Cuza on January 5th as Prince of Moldavia, and on January 24th as Prince of Wallachia. The Elective Assembly in Bucharest took place in the Sfatul Țării building on the Hill of Metropolia and was led by Metropolitan Nifon of Wallachia. Those called to vote have embraced the proposal to elect the same Prince, Alexandru-Ioan Cuza, in Wallachia, too. The election brought much joy to the 40 000 Romanians gathered on the Hill of Metropolia and was then recognized by the States of the World.
The Act of January 24, 1859, was the foundation of the Great Union of 1918. Thus, this Te-Deum service could be considered the first event in the series of those who will mark the Centennial of Great Romania during the year 2018 at Ss. Constantine and Helen Cathedral of Chicago.
