On Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at the General Consulate of Romania in New York, His Eminence Archbishop and Metropolitan Nicolae met with their Excellencies, Mr. George Cristian Maior, Ambassador of Romania to the USA, and Mr. Cătălin Radu Dancu, General Consul of Romania in New York. The topic of the meeting of more than two hours was the preparation in the United States of the celebration of the Centenary of Romania during the year 2018.
His Eminence Nicolae presented the program proposal that the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of the United States of America drew up. The program contains a plan of actions and events aimed at marking this historical moment for the Romanian people. From the discussions it was concluded that the steps to organize events that would share the rich history and culture of our people with the American people should be in close cooperation with the Embassy of Romania in Washington DC and in partnership with the General and Honorary Consulates of Romania in the USA. His Excellency, Ambassador Maior also underlined that the Embassy of Romania has already sent a program of activities to Romania and that he is open that this program be complemented with the proposals of the Archdiocese’s plan.
At the meeting, HE Metropolitan Nicolae was accompanied by Father Daniel Adrian Ene, Eparchial Secretary and Dean of New York, New England and Eastern United States. Ambassador George Maior was accompanied by Gabriel Rotaru, Minister Counselor of the Romanian Embassy in Washington, DC. They will develop a joint program of Archdiocese / Embassy / Consulate partnerships to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great Union both at the Archdiocese or Embassy level as well as at an important metropolitan area or local community level. Discussions and roundtables will take place in the big American cities to bring together, in preparation for these events, the Romanian Orthodox priests, the leaders of other denominations, the presidents of associations and foundations of culture and students, personalities of the Romanian-American academic and cultural space.
